Economic Impact

Agricultural trade is crucial to America’s rural economy, but is also important in terms of output, employment, and income for the entire U.S. economy. According to 2011 data from USDA’s Economic Research Service, for every 1 dollar that is spent on U.S. exports, another $1.29 was created in the U.S. economy to support this activity. Thus, the $136.4 billion of U.S. agricultural exports in 2011 produced an additional $176 billion in economic activity for a grand total of $312.3 billion of economic output. Further, ERS estimates that, in 2011, for every $1 billion of U.S. agricultural exports, 6,800 Americans were employed, both in direct and indirect activities. Based on this estimate and USDA’s state data of exports/value, one can extrapolate how many jobs, directly and indirectly, are related to agriculture exports in a given state.
